    Mercy For Animals’ U.S. paid internship program is a short-term opportunity open to students and entry-level or transitioning applicants

    As an intern in the Development Department at Mercy For Animals, you will gain hands-on experience in development and valuable knowledge of the animal protection movement. This position will allow you to hone a variety of skills in customer service, fundraising, organization, and communication as you help the department run smoothly and effectively to reach its fundraising goals. 

    You will assist with critical work:

    • Be the first point of contact and provide excellent customer service for supporters and donors who call or email, with a goal of responding within 24 hours: 
      • Assist donors who reach out with a variety of questions and needs, including unsubscribing from email lists, changing contact information, and updating communication preferences 
      • Redirect calls and emails as necessary if you aren’t the best person to take care of an issue (such as handling credit card information)
    • Help manage development’s organization-wide calendar in Asana so staff are aware of upcoming events, campaigns, and deadlines 
    • Help manage the development team’s calendars in Google, including scheduling departmental meetings and donor meetings for philanthropy officers and sending reminders about upcoming meetings and agendas that need review
    • Assist in managing and organizing multiple end-of-year donor thankathons, allowing the team to promptly thank donors for their gifts, and lead on organizing our Giving Tuesday thankathon
    • Help order any necessary office supplies to ensure philanthropy officers have the materials they need to communicate meaningfully with donors
    • Help the department share important updates at the biweekly all-staff meeting by creating compelling slides
    • Assist various team members with any other administrative tasks as they arise

    Compensation

    Interns are paid an hourly rate between $17.31 and $20.00, depending on education or experience, as well as given consistent weekly feedback.     We are currently seeking a director of accounting to join our finance team. In this role, you will oversee and direct Mercy For Animals’ accounting operations and work with the department to ensure organization-wide financial management and controls.

    You will do invaluable work:

    • Manage and oversee general day-to-day accounting 
    • Prepare budgets and forecasts with department, analyze financial performance, and monitor cash flow for a budget of up to $16 million 
    • Maintain, develop, and document processes for finance and accounting
    • Support international team members and accounting firms with best practices, troubleshooting, and monthly reconciliation
    • Prepare and analyze monthly global financial reports, including grant reporting, and provide updates on financial status to key leadership 
    • Maintain relationships and connect with external auditors and international accounting firms, bankers, and legal counsel to determine and implement best practices
    • Lead the organization’s efforts in annual audits and tax filings
    • Devise and implement strategies for continual improvement of financial management and reporting systems to achieve peak operational efficiency, including cash-flow modeling, evaluating third-party vendors, negotiating fees, vetting and implementing new software solutions, and conducting ongoing cost-saving analysis
    • Establish internal controls, policies, and procedures to mitigate risk and remain compliant with local, federal, and state or provincial laws and regulations
    • Partner with the development team to ensure proper management of revenue channels and alignment of revenue reporting
    • Follow all organizational policies and procedures
    • Perform any other duties assigned 

    Your qualifications will take our finance department to the next level:

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field
    • CPA license or enough experience to obtain one
    • Five to seven years of accounting experience, preferably as a financial controller
    • Advanced knowledge of QuickBooks
    • Strong understanding of and ability to interpret and apply generally accepted accounting principles
    • Work experience in nonprofit finance and grant management (preferred)
    • Experience supporting international entities (preferred) 
    • Experience with Excel and Google Sheets

    We are currently seeking a distributed and digital organizing manager, U.S., to join our organizing team. In this role, you will manage and grow Mercy For Animals’ U.S. organizing program and increase the movement’s capacity by implementing distributed and digital strategies that develop grassroots leadership. This work will entail building people power through recruitment and management of volunteers, using online and offline tactics to activate volunteers, designing and executing training programs, and supporting campaigns. 

     

    You will do invaluable work:

    • Develop distributed organizing strategies to build a network of trained, action-oriented volunteers and organizers
    • Manage digital mobilizing and action to advance strategic goals and specific campaigns (animal welfare, plant-based, legislative, and public policy) 
    • Direct strategy for email engagement and mass communication, targeted ads, and digital content for the organizing team 
    • Introduce and oversee mobile structures and tools, including broadcast SMS and peer-to-peer tools, and enable volunteer leaders to help run our programs, including communication channels, trainings, and outreach 
    • Manage systems and platforms used to maintain records and engage volunteers, including CRM programs, email listservs, communication and social platforms (such as Slack and Facebook groups), and contact lists
    • Assist with coordinating, designing, and facilitating training events, strategy sessions, field meetings, visibility events, or other large events as needed
    • Communicate and engage with volunteers regularly, and manage affiliated volunteer leaders and teams
    • Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures

    Your qualifications will take our digital organizing work to the next level:

    • Minimum of three years’ experience in distributed or digital organizing or campaigning (distributed campaign technology and advocacy or political organizing experience strongly preferred)
    • Experience in training design and facilitation, grassroots advocacy, or volunteer management, preferably in the animal protection movement (volunteer experience considered)
    • Experience using digital organizing tools and advocacy software or the ability to learn new software quickly and independently (experience using Salesforce or comparable CRM program, Engaging Networks, Hustle, Spoke, ThruTalk, or ThruText a plus)
    • Strategic and analytical thinking skills; strong problem-solving skills; and a deep commitment to feedback, learning, and improvement
    • Careful attention to detail, as well as project-management and organizational skills for complex projects and competing deadlines, whether working independently or collaboratively

    You will do invaluable work

    • Grow the Mercy For Animals volunteer network by recruiting, training, and leading people from across the region

    • Design and pilot a fellowship program aimed at identifying, engaging, and developing grassroots advocates in the animal protection or food justice space by coaching leadership and organizing skills

Shayna strongly values a growth mindset, open communication, teamwork, and a solutions orientation.     We are currently seeking an economist to join our research team. In this role, you will do invaluable work:

    • Conduct detailed research using insights from agricultural, behavioral, and experimental economics and econometric modeling to answer a variety of questions related to animal and plant farming; consumption of animal products and plant-based proteins; the interrelation of advocacy outcomes, such as corporate animal welfare commitments, with market and policy outcomes, such as consumer food preferences and subsidies; and animal agriculture’s connections to the environment and public health
    • Create viable transition models for factory farmers participating in our Transfarmation Project 
    • Collect information from farmers regarding the economics of factory farming and potential plant-based models 
    • Innovate creative solutions to financial challenges faced by contract farmers, such as indebtedness and dependency on integrators 
    • Stay abreast of corporate and legislative progress relating to animal welfare and plant-based food policy 
    • Develop research methods based on the best economic theory to identify the impacts of corporate and legislative progress
    • Conduct cost-benefit analyses of current and prospective animal-advocacy tactics and use findings to recommend action
    • Work with the research director to identify knowledge gaps and create methodologies for filling them
    • Collect data using observational and experimental methodologies
    • Analyze, evaluate, and interpret research data
    • Document and report research findings and present them to internal and external stakeholders
    • Attend and present research findings at relevant conferences 
    • Build relationships and collaborate with other researchers

    Your qualifications will take our research to the next level:

    • Master’s degree in a field of applied economics, such as agricultural or behavioral economics (doctorate preferred)
    • Three to five years of quantitative research experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Research experience using econometric methods (familiarity with discrete choice, fixed effects, random effects, time series, and other tangential econometric methodologies a plus)
    • Excellent research and analytical skills, with enthusiasm for finding and handling large and complex datasets
    • Experience using statistical software packages for complex quantitative analysis or comfort with at least one programming language typically used in data science (such as R, Stata, or Python)
    • Strong written and oral communication skills, as well as a high degree of organization, efficiency, and attention to detail
    • Ability to translate complex results for lay audiences

A strategy-focused team player, she aims to leverage individual expertise and collaboration to create meaningful, evidence-based change aligned with Mercy For Animals’ mission. She values innovation, communication, and authenticity, and she deeply enjoys supporting and celebrating the team’s work and accomplishments. Outside Mercy For Animals, your team leader enjoys photographing wildlife, listening to live music, and spending time outdoors with her husband and companion dog.

In this role, you will identify, organize, and empower farmers to transition out of intensive animal agriculture within Mercy For Animals’ innovative Transfarmation project, which seeks to create a just, equitable, and sustainable food system by building a global movement of farmers transitioning out of animal agriculture to sustainable crop farming.

     

    You will do invaluable work:

    • Lead and implement outreach efforts in the United States focusing on farmers wanting to transition out of intensive animal agriculture
    • Manage recruitment by developing and implementing a recruitment strategy
    • Arrange and attend one-on-one meetings and farm visits with farmers interested in Transfarmation
    • Conduct regular check-ins with existing farmers in the program to determine how best to support them
    • Develop strong relationships with farmers and map out their needs for transitioning
    • Coordinate and supervise technical consultants, such as crop experts, to best support farmers in their transitions
    • Collaborate with the economist to help farmers gain financial security as they transition
    • Develop a program for and recruit farmer ambassadors who can expand outreach to other farmers
    • Create and manage an online Transfarmation network for farmers to learn from one another and share best practices
    • Run regular farmers meetings to create learning opportunities and a coordinated strategy
    • Promote Transfarmation by speaking with media, as well as attending and speaking at events or conferences
    • Collaborate with the Transfarmation director to plan and implement the project’s vision, strategy, and goals
    • Maintain records and regularly report on all outreach efforts
    • In collaboration with the director, work with the video, creative, and communications teams to help tell farmers’ stories, highlight the project’s success, and amplify Transfarmation’s visibility and impact

     

    Your qualifications will take our Transfarmation team to the next level:

    • Passion for creating a just, equitable, and sustainable food system through collaboration and movement building, especially with farmers raising animals in industrial models
    • Experience in community organizing, nonprofit work, or social service 
    • Ability to empathize and communicate with people with different life experiences and values
    • Deep understanding of, or direct experience with, animal agriculture, preferably industrial-scale chicken farming and the contract-farming system
    • Outstanding interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence
    • Proven commitment and openness to continued personal and organizational growth in diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice principles
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Willingness to travel locally and nationally

    Compensation and Benefits 

    Earn an annual salary of $48,000–$55,000, depending on qualifications, and enjoy a commute-free life as a remote team member. In addition to a collaborative and innovative work environment, you will be able to take part in our benefits package, including no- or low-cost health, vision, and dental insurance; generous paid time off and sick leave; and a 401(k) retirement plan, with a dollar-to-dollar employer match of up to 3 percent of your annual salary.
